2009 Toyota Venza Preview

2009 Toyota Venza Preview
by Robert Obara / Auto123.com
On sale later this year is the all-new 5-passenger 2009 Toyota Venza. Regarded as an SUV, this new-age crossover is more like a tall wagon; the Venza is 12.5 cm shorter in height than the Lexus RX 350, but order the Venza in top trim level and the two vehicles could be like two peas in a pod.

With its large wheels and chrome trim, the Venza appeals as a new-age crossover.

Just like the RX 350, the Venza can be had with an all-wheel-drive system and a 3.5-litre V6 capable of towing 3,500 lbs. This V6 is rated at 268 hp at 6,200 rpm and 246 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm. Inside, the Lexus-esque optional extras include a navigation system, XM "real-time" traffic updates, satellite radio capability, 13-speaker JBL audio system, rear-seat entertainment system, smart key system, backup camera, power tailgate, HID headlights and heated leather seats.

The Venza 'one-ups' the RX 350 with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. At 20.5 cm, the Venza also has more ground clearance than the Lexus, but neither vehicle is devoted towards off-road use; the V6-equipped Venza is the first Toyota to come standard with 20-inch wheels. The Venza is also the first Toyota to be offered with an automatic high-beam headlight system. This system automatically dims high beam headlights when light from oncoming traffic is detected, and then automatically reverts back to the high beam setting once the traffic has passed.

Continuing on the Lexus comparison, the Venza also offers a model that sips less fuel. Instead of using a complex hybrid-electric system like that of the RX 400h, the Venza offers cylinder elimination (from 6 to 4) in the form of a smaller, 2.7-litre 4-cylinder model. Front-wheel-drive is the standard setup for both the 4- and 6-cylinder models to further increase affordability and fuel efficiency. The less expensive 4-cylinder Venza also comes with smaller 19-inch wheels that may make finding (and paying for) winter tires easier.

The Venza provides a modern level of active safety with stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Passive safety is assured with seven airbags, including a driver's knee airbag. The driving position itself is aided by a tilt and telescopic steering wheel. On the dashboard, there are two-tiered information displays to inform the driver.

This interior ambiance can be enjoyed from rear 60/40 split reclining seats.
